Social Justice Warriors? – Jesus is not a Social justice warrior; He is God – by S.L Chetty

Progressive Christians who have become social justice warriors have taken a mystical standpoint on the Bible to accommodate their beliefs. They think the works Jesus called us to do include social justice movements or revolutions. But Jesus called us to spread the gospel and do the works of the kingdom, not follow worldly movements.

Wisdom and discernment are needed when applying the Word of God. Jesus Christ was not simply a man with good morals and ethical codes; He was and is and is to come. He is God. This means that we cannot only draw from a few of His teachings in complete isolation of everything else He taught. Jesus is Lord, and all of His word stands. Yes, He taught us not to discriminate based on race, social status, or ethical background. But He also taught us forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-22).

There is no forgiveness in the social justice movement because it is a worldly movement; it is an endless cycle of victimhood and hate. If you constantly see yourself as a victim, you will never fully understand the gospel and truly come to Christ. If you constantly discriminate against anyone, whether you are the victim or not, you are stuck in an endless cycle. There is no reconciliation.

This social justice movement is building walls between the communities rather than tearing them down as the message of Christ does. Progressives who are a part of this movement, whether Christian or otherwise, end up discriminating while claiming to be fighting against discrimination. This is because in societal structures and worldly movements there are always sides. These progressives must choose a side: against the rich (discrimination based on wealth, extreme socialism, or communism), against the poor (discrimination due to social class, extreme capitalism), against a particular race (racism), or against a particular ethnic group (ethnic cleansing). It never ends, and it only leads to more hatred.

The question then arises: what about sin? What about social injustice? What about the ones who discriminate against others unjustly? Do we just let it be? Well, Jesus died for all of our sins. Thus, if those people would repent and believe, they could receive forgiveness because we serve a merciful God. Instead of hating and choosing sides based on a worldly movement, rather choose God and spread the gospel so that by believing they may repent and be saved.

As a community we must not accept sin, definitely not; we must acknowledge the evil so as to protect those who are innocent, but at the same time we must understand that we are not in control. We must leave it to God to carry out the final judgement. We are on the brink of world war, but these things must come to pass because all Bible prophecies must be fulfilled. Understanding God’s sovereignty over all things helps us have hope in the future. It is the Lord who protects nations, and it is also God that delivers nations into the hands of their enemies because of sin (Daniel 4:35). While it pains us to see the suffering in the world due to all types of calamities, we cannot control it. Evil is rampant in the world, but our only weapon is prayer, not a revolution. We must speak truths, but only those that align with the Word, the government of God (Romans 12:2). We cannot carry on spreading the hate by starting “revolutions” and getting stuck in worldly movements that the devil created. One of his aims is to keep believers stuck in a loop so they do not fulfil their God-given purposes.

This is not to say that the gospel is about accepting sin; it’s not. The gospel is about repentance and forgiveness and the freedom that comes from submitting to God and his way. Understanding that we are always going to fall short, we are always going to be tempted to sin, but we can always go back to God, who’s merciful and loving, and ask for help. That is prayer, a request to God to help us because we cannot do it ourselves, and whether that answer is yes or no, God is always trustworthy and true and will work all things out for the good of those that love Him. We must forgive others just as Jesus forgave us and trust that God and his law are the only way to live. The gospel, the true message of Jesus Christ and His kingdom to come, is deeper than any of our preconceived ideas about society. To have a godly worldview based on scripture is to see things from Jesus’s perspective. This is not to say we can be like Him or become like God in any way; He is divine (John 1:14). But it does mean we can have a mind of Christ that can lead society towards a Kingdom vision, a Kingdom where there is no distinction between races, there is no hate, there is no war, there is no class, there is no gender inequality, and there is only love that flows from our Lord and Saviour Jesus, who reunites us with our Father in heaven for eternity. It is not a kingdom that we can create by our effort on earth because the devil is the prince of this world. Jesus Christ told us that He went to prepare a place for us, and soon our Lord, the King of Kings, will return, and with Him He will bring the Kingdom of Heaven. It is why Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” It is a future kingdom come. Don’t you want to be part of that Kingdom? Don’t you want to inherit that kingdom? You can; anyone can, because the Lord came to save all mankind, and all it takes is repentance, coming to Jesus, and believing that He is Lord and the only way to salvation. May God bless all who read this.
